Lets say you apply a school R1 and get in.. they notify you in like two weeks. And then you want to apply to schools in R2. How long can you wait before notifying R1 school you want to attend? Don't you want to wait for R2 notifications also? Is that what the deposit is for so you can extend the intent to register till nearly Sept next year? Just trying to do some timing here without having to worry about the various dates/deadlines of schools.. but could never get a clear answer.

It really depends on the schools you apply to. Often times R1 acceptance deadlines come a few weeks prior to R2 decisions being released. Many people work with the school to get an extension to several days after R2 decisions so they can weigh their options. Some people pay a deposit at one school and then forfeit that money to attend another. If you have applied early decision to any schools you are committing to attend if accepted and should withdraw all of your other apps.

Hope this helps.
