(C) 14 percent higher than the previous yearтАЩs figure
(D) an amount that is 14 percent more than the previous year was
(E) an amount that is 14 percent higher than the previous yearтАЩs figure
i say - C, they say - E.

I'd have chosen (B)
maybe (E) is right because it addresses us clearly to "an amount" avoiding any ambiguity.
But still it is too long and contains a phrase "previous yearтАЩs figure" which is inappropriate.
It sounds more correctly when you say "the figure of a previous year"
Anyway, we have to wait for our guru AkamaiBrah to explain this answer choise.

E is necessary to maintain a parallel construction:
...., an amount that: 1) is 14% higher than the previous year and: 2) largely offsets weak demand from Europe and Japan.

akamai, are you speaking in english? 
i remember my student years in college, we learnt poems of some english and american poets, robert burns etc.. very complicated language. even with dictionary we could hardly understand, what's going on.
