A

B is wrong because of the phrase red wine. In A it is clearly marked as the consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine. This phrase creates no cinfusion.

C, D, E are awkward

i would pick (A)

Sales of wines declined in the late 1980s, but they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease.

(A) Sales of wines declined in the late 1980s, but they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease. -

(1) "began to grow" is better than "began growing again"

(2) "but they began to grow again after the 1991 report" immediately after the comma makes more sense

(3) "the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease" is better than "the 1991 report that linked a reduced risk of heart disease with a moderate consumption of alcohol, particularly of red wine"

(B) Sales of wines declined in the late 1980s, but after the 1991 report that linked a reduced risk of heart disease with a moderate consumption of alcohol, particularly of red wine, they began growing again

What do you mean by red wine is placed better? Can you please explain?

Consider an example: Hary brought some nice chocolaes, especially the ones with caramel inside them.

ESPECIALLY has to be immediately followed by the set of items which ESPECIALLY needs to highlight.
Coming back to our question, PARTICULARLY has to be immediately followed by the set of ietms (WINE) to highlight.
But in B, it is not the case...

I say A, although I chose between A & B a bit differently.

Choice B says: "..., particularly red wine,..." in reference to consumption. However, the noun phrase that fits would be "the consumption OF red wine," rather than "the consumption red wine." Thus, A fits better, because it says "and particularly OF red wine"

This is a good example of the GMAT guys throwing in answer choices in the passive voice (C), (D), and (E).

Passive is not necessarily wrong--just keep an eye out for it as it is usually NOT PREFERRED.

(C): "which was linked with a reduced risk of heart disease"

(D): "with a reduced risk of heart disease linked in a 1991 report"

(E): "a reduced risk of heart disease linked to moderate alcohol consumption"

Notice (A) is phrased "they began to grow after the [report] that linked [A] with [B]" is clearer and stronger in the active voice.
(B) is also stronger in active voice "the 1991 report that linked [A] with [B]".

Also in (B), "a moderate alcohol consumption" can simply be "moderate alcohol consumption."

A)they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease
Correct.
B)after the 1991 report that linked a reduced risk of heart disease with a moderate alcohol consumption, particularly red wine, they began growing again.
"red wine" incorrectly refers to consumption.
C)in a 1991 report, moderate alcohol consumption, and particularly of red wine, which was linked with a reduced risk of heart disease, caused them to begin to grow again.
moderate alcohol consumption - caused them to begin to grow again. Changes the meaning because the report, not the consumption caused the growth.
D)with a reduced risk of heart disease linked in a 1991 report with moderate alcohol consumption, in particular red wine, they began growing again
"red wine" incorrectly refers to consumption.
E)a reduced risk of heart disease linked to moderate alcohol consumption in a 1991 report, and in particular red wine, started them growing again.
reduced risk started them growing again.

Ans: "A"

Have to go with A here.
In choice B "particularly that of Red Wine" would make sense -- as they are talking about consumption of alcohol and not the type of wine.
Also the phrase "Began growing" -- seems awkward but I do not believe is grammatically incorrect. That is not the error that renders choice B incorrect.

C,D & E are confusing. B illogically makes alcohol consumption parallel to red wine. Choice A uses "of red wine" correctly.

(A)they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease.
(B) after the 1991 report that linked a reduced risk of heart disease with a moderate alcohol consumption, particularly red wine, they began growing again -> reversed order of meaning in origin choice.
(C) in a 1991 report, moderate alcohol consumption, and particularly of red wine, which was linked with a reduced risk of heart disease, caused them to begin to grow again -> "moderate alcohol consumption" wrongly "caused them to begin to grow again". It should be the impact of the 1991 report
(D) with a reduced risk of heart disease linked in a 1991 report with moderate alcohol consumption, in particular red wine, they began growing again -> reversed order of meaning in origin choice.
(E) a reduced risk of heart disease linked to moderate alcohol consumption in a 1991 report, and in particular red wine, started them growing again -> link with <> link to; link with ~ associated with; A link to B = A cause B

So A should be the best answer

I just have one question about the usage of "they" here. I thought that 'sales' is singular while usage of "they" indicates otherwise.
Can somebody throw some more light on this?

Can you provide your reasoning as to how "sales" can be singular??
