Same overall score. Same Q score. Different V scores???????? [#permalink]
27 Nov 2010, 02:01
There are 2 people on GMATClub.com who gave their GMAT in 2010: jauer112 - 770 (Q50 V46) - gave GMAT on 23 Nov 2010. http://gmatclub.com/forum/770-q50-v46-105245.htmlEok - 770 (Q50 V44) - gave GMAT on 19 Jun 2010. http://gmatclub.com/forum/770-q50-v44-96062.htmlFirstly, HOW is this possible? And secondly, does a Q51 affect your score more than a V47?!

Hmmm...! So is a Q51 necessary to cross 770 even if you're scoring between 44-48 in Verbal?

There are score ranges which correspond to the total scores. There was another user who got a 770 with a Q50 V46. It's very much possible to get the same overall score and have different Verbal scores. Also, your scaled score itself falls in a range, if my logic is right. I wouldn't read too much into this.

I agree with Whiplash, your scaled score most likely falls in a range. In case of jauer112 his/her scaled verbal score was probably between 43.5 and 44.5. Since some users with Q50 and V44 got a score of 760 it is likely that it was closer to 44.5 than to 43.5.
If you want to find out the minimum / maximum scaled Q and V score that yields a given GMAT score (or vice versa) I'd just google this. To answer your other question, I googled "Q50, V48, 780" and found that there are some people who got 780 with this combination, so it seems you don't have to score Q51 to get more than 770 (given a verbal score of 48+).
At the end of the day I think that's all irrelevant. Just do your best at the test and see what score pops up.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to figure out if I should spend extra time on math to get to a Q51 or not.

I think when you're at a Quant 49 or so, there really is nothing you can do to get it up to a 51. It's all dependent on that time and your mindset. Make sure you don't make careless mistakes and do the GMAT Club tests to go through some common traps you might encounter and you should be okay. I would focus on the Verbal if I were you!
