I think the problem is that of pronoun reference ("its" refers to singular).
We can correct this by "their" (refering to invertibrates), hence answer choice C.

Certain invertebrates and fish (plural) convert starch, in effect manufacturing their (plural) own antifreeze. Hence C.

Author wants to draw the similarity between the act of "converting starches into complex carbohydrates" and that of "manufacturing antifreeze". C best conveys that.

D changes the meaning of the sentence and implies that "converting starches" is necessary before "manufacturing antifreeze". Moreover, for the sentence to be grammatically correct, verb "can" is missing: so that they can manufacture their own antifreeeze
