It is a toss up between A and D.

D preserves the flow of the statement by introducing the preposition by, while A interrupts the flow.

So, I will go with D.

A.

I guess it all depends on when each action ("becoming common" and "replacing records" happen).

B shows it like these are independent sentence. Actually these two are related and hence "and" is a wrong conjunvtion. Also parallelism is broken.
C gives an idea that music replaces tapes and records.
D is okay, but if we are using "by", then it should be "by replacing" - eventually is redundant.
E shows it like it is becoming common only to replace the tapes and records.

A is fine in that it shows that two actions happen together, "eventually".

You should avoid any conjunctions in this type of statement.

A for me.

I believe it is a typical case of Subjunctive; "would" makes the eventuality less factual, thus Subjunctive. gerund phrase goes good with it.

(A) for me. It has the correct seqeunce of events, and it does not have the joiner 'and' that is present in (B). Having 'and' in the sentence compounds the two phrases in such a way that it seems both events will take place at the same time

A is the OA. I marked D and this is my doubt.
'eventually replacing tapes and records altogether ' is a phrase which is supposed to modify compact disks. In this sentence its placed next to most common form of recorded music. However it doesn't make sense in this sentence if its placed next to compact disc also.
So i felt that the choice D gives more clarity by introducing the 'by'.
hardworker_indian - i feel that in 'by eventually replacing' eventually is required because it means that the change doesn't occur overnight but occurs over a period of time. i may be wrong.
Can anyone explain why D is wrong. :(

digital music will become the most common form and will replace the traditionl forms. ousting (of traditional) is the cause, not the reason, of (digital) becoming popular.

D says digital coding technology is not the cause of becoming popular, but it is the removal of tapes and records.
