This is my analysis

The correct idiomatic usage of "so" is
so adjective/adverb that
or
so adjective/adverb as to

Now we are talking about a phenomenon here. The climatic
shifts dont have any intention do they ?
So we cannot convey an action here. Rather just a description
about them is enough.
D and E both make it look like the climatic shifts have some intention
For example - Cheetah was careful enough not to be seen by gazele
Here Cheetah wanted not to be seen.

A) B) and C) have subtlle differences

C) The pronoun is not very clear here in what it refers to.
It looks like the climatic shifts are unable to distinguish
themselves.
B) Does not use correct form of idiom

A) It best in two repects
1) it uses correct form of the idiom
2) So Adjective/Adverb As tells how they have
become indistinguishable.
