This Question is from Set 10. The OA given is E but i feel it should be A.

I think that the question evaluates an idiom, not the subjunctive mood.
D is wordy.

Inmediately, the question tries to evaluate if "condition" has to be written with "of" or "that". This is not a grammar rule, it just evaluates your knowledge of certain expressions in English.

I must admit that it is the first time I find this idiom. In these extreme cases, your ear has to help you. However, it is not the best way. The solution is memorizing these new expressions you find, there is not another way. Bookmark this question for future references and keep it also in your error log.

In relation to D, it is not an "economical" choice, too many words to express the same in E.

I think I deserve kudos 8-)
