Straight-forward it's a B.

George Washington dedicated his life | to strengthening the economy in the south | with soil improvement and diversification of corps.

The prepositions to and with are used perfectly, the former to drive the object of the sentence and the latter for the modifier.

Hi,

The OA is C.
I agree with the usage of 'through' as the means to strengthen the economy but It seems the phrase ' to the strengthening the economy ' seems awkward.

Could you please put some more insight into it.

Thanks.

The right answer is C (Official Answer OA). But still not digestible as for the phrase 'to the strengthening the economy ' . Not sure...So if anyone can throw some light on this.

Initially i thought the answer is B but after taking a close look at C, i think, C is the correct. In B -

soil improvement and diversification of corps

is not parrallel.

C is the only choice where parallelism has been maintained - soil improvement and crop diversification

IMO C.
Strengthening is done "through" something... not "with" something..
Thanks for posting.

Ok. So this question needs to be edited. The third option should be -
C. [strike]the[/strike] strengthening the economy of the south through soil improvement and crop diversification.

IMO C.
There are two reasons:-
1. Parallelism.

2.
'to the strengthening the economy' is correct for the reason that preposition is always followed by noun or pronoun. i.e. preposition always comes in Prepositional phrase.

e.g.
We were lost in the woods.

During the show, I fell asleep in my chair.

C. soil improvement and crop diversification are parallel. 'through' here means 'by means of'.

first The economic should be economy.second ,Dedicated ......To need a verb after that not a noun phrase(economy strengthening is concise form of strengthening of economy).
the other issue is parallelism soil improvement and crop diversification should be parallel .that is in C. correct issue.
D-has //ism issue. simple and complex gerunds is compared.
E-ditto issue A
B-//ism issue.

Let me try to put my points here..

B. strengthening the economy in the south with soil improvement and diversification of corps. It should be to strengthen. To Strengthening is wrong.
C. the strengthening the economy of the south through soil improvement and crop diversification.
D. the strengthening of the economy of the south through improving soil and crop diversifying improving soil || diversifying Crop .. more over diversifying crop sounds better to me
