Dear friends, could you explain why in the following unit the best answer is E. I chose D.

I recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding, in part that their steers should acquire certan characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor.

a) the same
b) in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics
c) partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics
d) partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
e) partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

What is the underlined portion? Are there typos?

In that question I would choose E over D because D uses PASSIVE voice ("...characteristics should be acquired by the steers..."), while E uses ACTIVE voice ("..to acquire characteristics ...").

Apparently GMAT usually prefers active voice instead of passive voice. Even in the AWA.

Bingo. (e) is also more concise, which GMAT likes as well.

partly to do X and partly to do Y~ is idiomatic.

Also, (E) uses the active voice.
