Hi everybody,

Today I decide to post one of good questions I practice each day with appropriate and complete explanations, I hope you like it:

Question: The school board decided to reduce the number of children attending the after-school program, to increase the amount of time allocated for each mathematics or science class, and they decided to make the money allocated to extracurricular activities larger.

A) program, to increase the amount of time allocated for each mathematics or science class, and they decided to make the money allocated to extracurricular activities larger
B) program, to make greater the amount of time allocated for each mathematics or science class, and they decided to make the money allocated to extracurricular activities greater
C) program, to make greater the amount of time allocated for each mathematics or science class, and it decided to make the money allocated to extracurricular activities greater
D)program and to increase the amount of time allocated for each mathematics or science class, and it also decided to allocate more money to extracurricular activities
E) program, and to increase the amount of time allocated for each mathematics or science class, and to make the money allocated to extracurricular activities larger

Explanation
:
Identify
Pronouns

The error is indicated by the [[pronoun]] "they" in the underlined portion of the sentence.

Rules
Rule: A pronoun must unambiguously agree with the noun to which it refers.

Here, the plural pronoun "they" does not agree in number with its noun, "the school board," which is a collective (and therefore singular) noun.

POE
Answer choices A and B both commit the same error and should be eliminated.

Compare Remaining Choices
Compare C to D.
Answer C creates an imbalanced list ("to reduce...to make greater...and it decided to") by using a verb and comparative ("greater") as the second construction of the list. The first part of the list used only a verb. Choice D, on the other hand, uses a logically parallel construction in the first part of the list ("to reduce...and to increase"), which, as a nested list, is also parallel to the rest of the sentence. Eliminate C.

Compare D to E.
Choice D uses the idiomatically correct comparative phrase "more money." Choice E uses the idiomatically incorrect phrase "make the money allocated larger." "Larger" defines physical size, while "greater" more clearly defines amounts or relative sizes. The comparative "more" is the most idiomatic comparison for this construction.
Eliminate E.
Choose D.

D)program and to increase the amount of time allocated for each mathematics or science class, and it also decided to allocate more money to extracurricular activities
E) program, and to increase the amount of time allocated for each mathematics or science class, and to make the money allocated to extracurricular activities larger .

Parallelism - to reduce,to increase, to allocate
Eliminate B and C - incorrect phrase "to make greater the amount"
Eliminate E - "to make the money allocated .. larger"
A & D left
A they decided? School Board singular Eliminate

Answer is D
