C.

'digging' is required to be || with 'installing'. Eliminate everything but C.

I vote for E. Would it not be "that" instead of "to", because it is a continuation of "proposed installing pumps,.......that.........

I think it should be D. Relative pronoun that explains what the pumps will do as per the proposition. And since it is a proposition...proposed that trenches be dug....subjunctive...

Proposed what? Install pumps to lower ground water level, but installing pumps by themselves don't dig trenches, so, proposed pumps to lower underground water level, and proposed trenches be dug...I think it should be D.

Or, it should be B, for the sake of parallelism. to lower underground water levels and to dig trenches around the bases.

Parallelism. Installing and digging trenches makes sense to me.
Is (C) the correct answer?
Experts please elaborate

Cheers

it is convincing but eGMAT says that use of word of word 'Propose' must come with 'that' and 'be' construction-- Subjunctive verb form -
It should be ---- that the UG water b3e lowered and that the trenches be dug.

So is the correct answer wrong as per GMAT format, if I follow eGMAT precisely (for other SC questions in future?)

Hi Nidhi,

I also fell into trap when i looked at proposed....Normally propose is used in different way.. for example... I propose that all the team be here before noon....These kind of scenarios that is required. here we are talking about "has proposed" and there is no THAT immediately after proposed.. so it is not the construction we were thinking of... Installing pumps and digging are clearly parallel.... Even Manhattan says the same thing as e-gmat said.

The Swedish engineering firm is proposing two things :

1) Install pump
2) Dig trenches

So both of these should be parallel

A) ... has proposed installing pumps ... to (lower the underground water level and dig trenches)

This implies pump will dig trenches

B)..has proposed installing pumps....[ to (lower the underground water level) and to (dig trenches)]
Same as A

C) has proposed (installing pumps .. lower the underground water level) and ( digging trenches)

Yup. Correct

D)( installing pumps ..that lower the underground water level ) and (that trenches be dug)
Present continuous vs simple present. Out

E)..has proposed (installing pumps... that lower the underground water level) and (trench digging)

digging is a gerund and trench is an adjective here.

So we are comparing action to gerund here. So this is also out

This question is testing us on Parallelism

To help preserve ancient Egyptian monuments threatened by high water tables, a Swedish engineering firm has proposed installing pumps ,perhaps solar powered, to lower the underground water level and digging trenches around the bases of the stone walls.

Here the Blue parts are the proposals of the Engineering firm (which are parallel)

1. Installing
2. Digging

installing pumps, perhaps solar powered, to lower the underground water level

Here the green and orange parts are modifying the Pumps
