Hi all,

Please solve this SC, and give me your reasons for choosing the answer choice. Don't forget your reasons for choosing the answer choice are VERY important. So go ahead - give it a shot.

The World Bank, the only one of its kind, provides loans to developing member countries, gives technical assistance for development projects, and for projects from other public and private sources encourages co-financing.

A. provides loans to developing member countries, gives technical assistance for development projects, and for projects from other public and private sources encourages co-financing.
B. provides loans to developing member countries, gives technical assistance for development projects, and for projects from other public and private sources encouraging co-financing.
C. provides loans to developing member countries, gives technical assistance for development projects, and for projects from other public and private sources encouraged co-financing.
D. provides loans to developing member countries, gives technical assistance for development projects, and encourages co-financing for projects from other public and private sources.
E. provides loans to developing member countries, gives technical assistance for development projects, but encourages co-financing for projects from other public and private sources.

C is the correct answer. Parallelism.

The sentence starts the parallel structure with the format: "verb + noun"
provides + loans, gives + tech assistance.

The above mentioned format should be maitained for parallelism. Hence, the logical answer is one that contains: verb + noun: encourags co-financing

I would say D is more parallel. Here`s the reasoning. X, Y, and Z

Did you mean D?

I would choose D for parallellism.
Bank provides loans, gives tech. assistance and encourages co-financing.

Hi Darth,

I am stuck between D and E.
Why not 'E'.

Cheers....V!

(D) is better.

"provides, gives, and encourages" is better than "provides, gives, but encourages" since the actions of providing, giving, and encouraging serve for one same purpose.

Wow!! I am happy to see so many responses. Here's the kicker!! The OA is not D. I guessed D too, but I did not find the OE too convincing. The question comes from realtestquestions.com Test 1, Verbal Section Question 41.

Do you guys like to take a second shot, before I reveal the OA and OE in a few hours.

Hey!! Himalaya, good to see you participating actively in these forums.

Ok!! I guess I shouldn't prolong the agony any longer. The OE is as follows - The best answer is B. Choices A, D and C all violate parallelism by putting the indirect object ahead of the verb, and for project from other public and private sources… The use of but in choice E is incorrect because encourages is not contrast to provides and gives.

Looks like the OE has a typo, and the answer should be D. This is the part that scares me. If I stumble upon questions, where I cannot trust the answer choice, what am I to do. Well!! I can always fall back upon GMATCLUB.

Thank ya all for participating.

D is the answer. This has the correct parallelism since we have encourages co-financing in the 3rd part.

Oops... I guess I posted without readng the complete thread. Did not know the question had been answered.
