Hello, can you please help to answer (explanations):

Trying to learn some of the basics of programming is the same as to tinker with a car when one is a teenager: some people end up going to engineering school, and others, twenty years later, remember nothing of the experience.

(A) the same as to tinker with a car when one is a teenager
(B) similar to a teenager tinkering with a car
(C) like tinkering with a car as a teenager
(D) the same as a teenager tinkering with a car
(E) like the teenager’s tinkering with a car

Thanks in advance,

It is typical issue Like Vs As.
Like is for comapring nouns and As is used for compare clauses.
In this case it is comaprision of clauses so it 'As' as to be used.

Next 'To learn' should go with 'To tiker'.

So the answere should be 'A'

I'd prefer to go with C. "Like" is used when two nouns are compared and "as" when two actions performed by two nouns are compared. Also, "Like" represents "something same...other than...", so the two items on either side of Like should be comparable but not exactly the same, only a analogy type relationship can exist.

In this sense, I'd like to go with C. what's the OA?

IMO A

here two clauses are compared , and therfore as is correct
trying(VERB) in 2nd clause after as is in ellipse , and hence the structure before and after as is not parallel in all except A
i.e trying to learn.....is same as (trying ) to tinker--------> Choice A is absoultely parallel

My ans is C
"Trying to" and "tinkering with" is //
and I do not think "trying to learn.." is a clause? I think it is something of a gerund and acts as a subject(Noun) of the sentence. so, "like" is applicable here.

Trying to learn some of the basics of programming is the same as to tinker with a car when one is a teenager: some people end up going to engineering school, and others, twenty years later, remember nothing of the experience.
(A) the same as to tinker with a car when one is a teenager--> i think it needs "like"
(B) similar to a teenager tinkering with a car--> compare the "trying to" with teenager
(C) like tinkering with a car as a teenager
(D) the same as a teenager tinkering with a car--> compare the "trying to" with teenager,i think it needs "like"

(E) like the teenager’s tinkering with a car-->i think teenager's tinkering is not the intended meaning; it means that everyone who is teenager tinkering. It is not the tinkering when you are a teenager.

the question is from 1000 series. It is provided that answer is A, but I believe that it is C.

Trying and tinkering are both gerunds. Gerunds are action nouns. Dissimillar nouns are compared using "like" , similar the same as. Do both of the procese are exactly similar or have a degree of dismiliraity?
Try to - is an idiom.
Think about parallelism here. doing smth is like doing smth....

C wins.

+1 for C. Trying to learn programming is LIKE doing another activity. It's not the SAME as something else.

C is the clear winner here.

"trying to learn" should be parallel to "tinkering"
