15. Schliemann determined at the age of seven to find the site of ancient Troy and devoted his subsequent career to do it.

A. devoted his subsequent career to do it
B. has devoted his subsequent career to do that
C. devoted his subsequent career to such an end
D. has devoted his subsequent career for that
E. devoted his subsequent career to that end

the OA is E..in this sentence do we prefer Devoted to Has devoted, because Schliemann devoted his career after he determined and not before?
I understand there are 2 time sequences the time when he determiined and the the time when he devoted his career.. dont these need to be distingushed..Using a simple past for both makes it appear as if both happened at the same time.. Pl explain.. thanks

here the question whether we know that he is dead or alive. Since we don't know he's alive we use past simple. Using present perfect we assume that maybe his career is not over.
