MA, is there not any typo in the question? Usually, one "is determined to do X" and passive mood should be applied. I think it should read something like "Schliemann was determined[...]"

b/w C and E, I go for E.

A,B and D are definitely wrong.

Go with E. He devoted to that exact end and not something on the lines of that end.

b) has devoted his subsequent career to do that

IMO,
either,
the sentence should be "Schliemann WAS determined -----" as paul stated.

or,
if the portion "determined at the age of seven to find the site of ancient Troy " is used as a "past participle" then the sentence should be without "AND".

The OA was said to be E because to that end is correct at the end.

A is wrong because it has no antecedent.
In B and D, has is not correct form of verb. C is also not idiomatic.
Left with E which is parallel and idiomatic expression.

Hi, Paul,

I think both active and passive are OK. Why do you think it's passive?

Thanks

a) devoted his subsequent career to do it
- 'it' has no clear referent. It's meant to refer to Schliemann's devotion to locate the site, but 'it' illogically refers to Troy in this sentence.

b) has devoted his subsequent career to do that
- present perfect is not required for this sentence.

c) devoted his subsequent career to such an end

d) has devoted his subsequent career for that
- present perfect is not required for this sentence.

e) devoted his subsequent career to that end

Between C and E, I'll take E. In E, 'to that end' is indiomatic. It also says very clearly that the 'end' is the task of locating the ancient site of troy. C uses 'such an end', but 'such' does not say very clearly what that end is.

E for me.
