School Selection Assistance needed: Indian IT Male GMAT 720 [#permalink] New post 03 Nov 2013, 23:31
Hi,

My GMAT score is 720(Q49/V40).
Engineering - 78.2% from non-IIT, non-REC institute.

I would like to apply to a full time MBA program for FALL 2014.

A few more details about my profile:-

I will have close to 5yrs of experience as an IT Business Analyst (Big 4) by the time i start the MBA program. I lead a team of 4 and will be promoted in 6-8 months to the level of Assistant Manager. Quite a few professional awards. No certifications.

I have some leadership experience in NGOs in Hyderabad. I have also won awards at national level technical competitions during engineering.

Why MBA - I want to get into the Management/Strategy consulting line. B-schools which have tie ups with BCG, Bain, McKinsey, etc will help me achieve this. Or, if a B-school is located in a city with good consulting companies, that would do too. IT consulting would be my backup option.

My current list of schools:

Darden, UVA (Gen Management, Consulting)
Fuqua, Duke University (Consulting)
National Univ of Singapore (Singapore Location)
Goizueta, Emory University (Consulting, Career Services)
Indian School of Business, Hyderabad (At Home :))
McDonough, Georgetown Univ (DC location)
Kelley, Indiana Univ (Alum Network)

It would be great if you can let me know which of these institutes are reach/achievable. I would also appreciate it if you could recommend any other schools.

Please do let me know if you require more info.

You’ve prepared a thoughtful list, and you are clearly aware of the challenges of your particular profile. Good start! Here are my thoughts on your competitiveness for the schools, given the info you’ve provided (and note that it assumes great applications  ):

Darden, ISB – high reasonable reach
Duke – reasonable reach
Kelley, Georgetown, Emory, NUS – on-par to reasonable reaches (this may seem overly conservative, but I’m taking into account your profile specifics, which make each category more competitive than in it would be for the overall population of applicants).

You might want to look at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler – excellent consulting concentration and pretty decent consulting recruiting. GMAT/GPA figures in line with Kelley, Emory, etc., but somewhat higher acceptance rate.

Thank you for the quick response Cindy :)
I'll try to highlight on my Leadership and mentoring abilities in my application.

I am looking to eliminate 2 out of these 4 schools - Kelley, Georgetown, Emory, Kenan-Flager.
Each school has its own pros and cons and i am not able to decide. Any thoughts?
I appreciate your time.

A touch choice for sure. Any two would work objectively. Probably I’d select Georgetown and Kenan-Flagler. They both have higher acceptance percentages without any decrease in profile or quality of program. Georgetown would locate you in a great city for a couple of years and not just the program but the whole university is globally focused, which can only benefit your learning and growth. UNC’s program is strong for consulting and is very rich in other ways including leadership. However, that’s me – I suggest determining which two most appeal to you – listen to your heart and gut as well as to your head.

Thank you for your inputs Cindy. I'll just have to dig deeper and pick 2.
