The one cursor that will point to the right choice will be the ‘for’ parallelism, which is maintained only in D. I will confidently tick D and tick off others

i pick D. according to intended meaning, A, B, C and E are out

Picked 'D' as well. The sentence tests meaning and parallelism. If you cut out the "fluff" in the sentence, it will help to understand the sentence. "Scientists..... have succeeded...... in mining heat from the Earth’s interior..." To do what? "to produce energy on a commercial scale,..."
I could be wrong =)

The word and is used a co-ordinating conjunction which is used to connect independent idea's. Here , the two things that scientists do are not independent. They are successful in generating heat from inside the earth to produce electricity. Clearly A and B are out. C is out for ambiguity. Now D clearly maintains parallelism. Hence , it wins.

As Daagh said you could have looked for || and picked D and moved on.

here is parallelism error. The parallel structure is enough for...............and for...........
Only option d follow the parallel structure enough for...............and for...........
Thus D is the correct answer

Why cant ellipses work here? there is no ambiguity in meaning if for is emitted?
why do we need to add "for".

we alway have to solve meaning problem on sc.

the basic meaning problem we have to solve in this question is the difference between

succeed in mining the heat and in producing
and
succeed in mining to produce

which meaning is better and more logic (we alway have to answer this question whenever we do sc problem). using our common sense of this world "to produce " here is better.

A. and producing energy on a commercial scale, enough for efficient generation of electricity and heating
B. and producing enough energy on a commercial scale for electricity to be generated efficiently and to heat
C. for energy production on a commercial scale, enough for generating electricity efficiently and to heat
D. to produce energy on a commercial scale, enough for generating electricity efficiently and for heating
E. to produce enough energy on a commercial scale for efficient generation of electricity and heat

ans D
We should first concentrate on the intended meaning, it's not the first time energy would be produced on a commercial scale. So we can eliminate A and B.
option C: for generating .... to heat is not parallel
option E: heat factories and homes doesn't sound good
Option D: for generating and for heating parallel and correct
