The one cursor that will point to the right choice will be the ‘ for’ parallelism, which is maintained only in D. I will confidently tick D and tick off others

Picked 'D' as well. The sentence tests meaning and parallelism. If you cut out the "fluff" in the sentence, it will help to understand the sentence. "Scientists..... have succeeded...... in mining heat from the Earth’s interior..." To do what? "to produce energy on a commercial scale,..." I could be wrong =)

The word and is used a co-ordinating conjunction which is used to connect independent idea's. Here , the two things that scientists do are not independent. They are successful in generating heat from inside the earth to produce electricity. Clearly A and B are out. C is out for ambiguity. Now D clearly maintains parallelism. Hence , it wins.
As Daagh said you could have looked for || and picked D and moved on.

A. and producing energy on a commercial scale, enough for efficient generation of electricity and heating -- heating is not || to generation of electricity -- correct form generating B. and producing enough energy on a commercial scale for electricity to be generated efficiently and to heat -- to heat is not || to be generated efficiently -- correct form to generate C. for energy production on a commercial scale, enough for generating electricity efficiently and to heat -- to heat is not || to for generating correct form to generate D. to produce energy on a commercial scale, enough for generating electricity efficiently and for heating -- for heating is || to for generating --right answer E. to produce enough energy on a commercial scale for efficient generation of electricity and heat -- heat is not || to generation of electicity -- correct form heat || generate

Only option d follow the parallel structure enough for...............and for........... Thus D is the correct answer
