C, D both are out because the Pronoun "They" is ambiguous. It could refer to the scientists or the mammals.

A- "in addition to how" sounds gibberish. The latter part is very wordy.

B- "In the determination of" is incorrect . Also the latter part of the sentence is in the Passive form.

E- Correct usage of "for determining" idiom.

In C they are ambiguous

IMO is C.
I don't think that "for determining" is a good idiom.

What is the source?

E is the best way of combining the questions on how and when
