Answer: B?
Error of comparison. Original sentence compares the 'process of registering emotion' to 'heartburn'. It should be comparing the 'process of registering emotions' to 'process of registering heartburn'. C would have a good choice but it has a subj + verb agreement problem.

Idiomatic usage: evidence that – eliminate A and B
A. of people initially registering emotions like sadness or anger in much the same way as
B. of people initially registering emotions such as sadness or anger much the same way as experiencing
C. that people initially register emotions such as sadness or anger in much the same way as they experiencing [ Correct use of Such as and “as” has a sub clause – hold it]
D. that a person initially registers emotions such as sadness or anger much the same way as experiencing [Why to switch from people to person – eliminate it]
E. that a person initially registers emotions like sadness or anger much the same way as [Why to switch from people to person – eliminate it]
Answer: C

In c, how can you justify the usage of 'they experiencing' ??? That just sounds totally incorrect.

Good point. My analysis is in the restrictive clause:
People initially register emotions such as sadness or anger in much the same way as they experiencing heartburn. Here they clearly refer “People”.
Now, include main clause:
Scientists have found new evidence that People initially register emotions such as sadness or anger in much the same way as they experiencing heartburn —by monitoring what’s going on within their bodies.
If they refer “scientists” then we have issue. I think it is very unlikely that "they" crosses the boundary of conjunction.

Answer: C well I think 'evidence of' is also correct usage...

Comparison is teste here. Such as must be used, because the intended meaning is to provide example of emotions. Scientists have found new evidence of people initially registering emotions like sadness or anger in much the same way as heartburn—by monitoring what’s going on within their bodies. Answer: C Please refer to Cambridge dictionary for the correct usage of idioms: evidence /"ev.I.d@nts/ noun [U] one or more reasons for believing that something is or is not true: The police have found no evidence of a terrorist link with the murder. [+ to infinitive] There is no scientific evidence to suggest that underwater births are dangerous. [+ that] Is there any scientific evidence that a person's character is reflected in their handwriting?

their represents plural so people is the correct noun form and evidence that is the correct idiom here +1 kudos if U like this
