Scored lower 2nd time around! HELP please! [#permalink] New post 06 Jan 2011, 14:33
I took the GMAT in October and got a 660. I took it today for the 2nd time and did much worse (580). I am so disappointed. I'm not sure what went wrong- probably anxiety. My GPA from UGA in Real Estate and Marketing was a 3.96 and I have 3.5 years of experience in management. Should I worry about taking the GMAT again? My applications for round 2 for UNC and UVA are in now. Haven't heard for interviews. Should I be considering schools in the top 40-50 rankings instead?

I would say it depends on two big things:

1. Given the rest of your profile, whether you think a 660 is good enough for your target schools. If they only consider your top score, the 580 won't hurt you.
2. Whether you're dead set on starting school next fall, or if you'd consider putting it off for a year so you can work for a better GMAT score and build a stronger overall package.

emont,

Thanks for your reply. I do want to go back to school next year, but will wait and re-apply next year if I don't get in. I think I need to take a few months off from the GMAT to re-evaluate my strategy if I need to take it next year.... Maybe I'll get in without taking it again! I am also applying to Chicago Booth Part-time program...

My first GMAT score was 680 (Q 49 and V 34). I wanted to cross the 700 mark and slogged for another 6 weeks but ended up with a 620 (Q47 and V29). I have been scoring well in my mock GMATs (i took 2 tests of GMAT prep and the 6 mock cats of Manhattan) and i steadily crossed 700. My worry now is not about crossing 700 but having landed up with something so low.. I m really upset and I dont know how much this 620 would affect my application if I go ahead and apply hoping that the schools would consider only the best score.. My focus is on ISB, XLRI and few schools in Singapore..

Just for your reference my profile is as below:
-------------------
Xth std 88.28 %
XII std 94.25%
Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science -- 82 %

Total work experience -- 4.5 yrs
29 months of IT services experience and then shifted gears to consulting / technology research
27 months into consulting / technology research

Professional Achievements:
Have been constantly recognized for my creativity, efficiency and ability to bring in profits to the firm i work for.

Academic:
I believe my performance has been consistent.

Extra curricular:
Social work, actively involved in college culturals and technical events, logo designing and elocution

Please help me!!! :(
