Seemingly inconsequential changes in sea temperature due to global warming eventually
result in declines in fish and seabird populations. A rise of just two degrees prevents the
vertical mixing of seawater from different strata. This restricts the availability of upwelling
nutrients to phytoplankton. Since zooplankton, which feed upon phytoplankton, feed the
rest of the food chain, the declines are inevitable. The boldface portion plays which one of
the following roles in the argument?
A) It is a hypothesis supported by the fact that phytoplankton feed on upwelling nutrients.
b) It is intended to provide an example of the ways in which the vertical mixing of seawater
affects feeding habits.
c) It helps show how global temperature changes affect larger sea animals directly.
d) It is offered as one reason that global warming must be curtailed.
e) It is offered in support of the idea that global warming poses a threat to all organisms.

My answer is E.
"Since zooplankton feed the rest of the food chain" explains that declines in zooplankton will affect the whole organisms.

I understand OA is C. Can someone illustrate?

The answer is (C) - but the source was incorrectly transcribed here. That last word in (C) "directly" should be written as "indirectly".

Once you make that change, the correct answer is (C). THe original question is from LSAT.

Step 1: First identify the argument: The declines of fish/seabirds is inevitable
Step 2: Ask the challenge question to figure out assumption: Why a decline?

Answer to challenge question: Because zooplankton feed on phytoplankton, which are dying because their nutrients are being restricted because vertical mixing of seawater is being prevented, etc.....and so on.

Basically a chain of events is leading to phytoplankton declining and zooplankton will decline as a result.

(C) makes sense because it connects the chain of events from the very top (change in temperature of a few degrees) all the way to decline in fish/seabird population. However, it happens INDIRECTLY through a series of links...rather than directly as was incorrectly written in the first place.

Global Warming -> Rise in temperature of seawater -> Prevents Vertical mixing of sea water from different strata -> Restricts availability of nutrients to Phytoplankton -> Decline in Phytoplankton -> Decline in zooplankton because it feeds on phytoplankton -> rest of the food chain is affected because zooplankton feeds them.

Boldface statement: zooplankton, which feed upon phytoplankton

A) It is a hypothesis supported by the fact that phytoplankton feed on upwelling nutrients. - Bold face does not provide an example but states the fact - Incorrect
b) It is intended to provide an example of the ways in which the vertical mixing of seawater affects feeding habits. - The relation has to be made between global warming and unavailability of food to the rest of food chain. - Incorrect
c) It helps show how global temperature changes affect larger sea animals directly. - Provide precise relation between global warming and larger sea animals - Correct
d) It is offered as one reason that global warming must be curtailed. - Incorrect
e) It is offered in support of the idea that global warming poses a threat to all organisms. - Provides a relation but it is a more generalized statement - Incorrect
