Select True/False question [#permalink] New post 05 Sep 2013, 10:24
For each of the following statements, select True if the statement can be verified as true based on the information in the table. Otherwise, select False.

Question is: There is a positive correlation between the number of public museums and the number of visitors per year.

My answer is
[Reveal] Spoiler:
false
but OA is
[Reveal] Spoiler:
True.

My reasoning for this question: Thrice in the graph the “number of visitors per year” drop while the number of public museum increases. I have marked it above. So, can you please help me in understanding how it is a positive correlation ? Am I missing something ?

Thanks & Regards
Vinni

Hi,

i think that the answer is TRUE.

these are the entries:

163 - 2,0
203 - 11,5 (X)
220 - 2,4
615 - 10,1
713 - 19,6
960 - 12,6 (X)
973 - 56,0
1053 - 40,4 (X)

Except for 3 entries when the "public" goes up, "the number of visitor" goes up; that's why correlation is POSITIVE. Please notice that the quetion did not ask if the correlation was equal to "1" (for example). So you can accept also few values that are not similar to the trend.

that means we can still have correlation with some exception?

we are not taught of what is correlation.

we learn from this question.

I dont think we can say that the correlation is positive when there are a few entries missing the trend. Can experts please help and clarify if the answer can actually be true basis thr reasoning presented above?
