I am very dubious of the source of this sentence as the term "sodas" is a bad example to use IMO. My understanding is that this sentence implies that Joan drank sodas in the liquid form, which is not countable.
1. Joan drank a great deal of sodas (soda water) or Joan drank many cans of sodas.
