Sentence Correction from paper base gmat [#permalink]
24 Aug 2006, 07:02
Rivaling the pyramids of Egypt or even the ancient cities of the Maya as an achievement, the army of terra-cotta warriors created to protect Qin Shi Huang, China’s first emperor, in his afterlife is more than 2,000 years old and took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete them.
A. took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete them
B. took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete it
C. took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete
D. 700,000 artisans took more than 36 years to complete
E. to complete them too 700,000 artisans more than 36 years
Hi can someone please explain why the answer is B and not C? Thanks

Since this is a very long sentence, try looking at only the relevant parts: The army of terra-cotta warriors ... took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete it.

hmmmm... tough...
"the painting took me 10 years to complete". here, he army is the painting, and 700,000 is me; no "it" required.
You sure that the OA is C?
may be cause there are 2 clauses: "it is 2000 old and [it] took me... to do it". the second bracketed "it" is kinda assumed?

Hi can someone please explain why the answer is B and not C? Thanks

Removing the modifiers and non-essential part the sentence becomes.
The army of terra-cotta warriors is more than 2,000 years old and took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete them.
A. took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete them
B. took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete it
C. took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete : (Complete what???)
D. 700,000 artisans took more than 36 years to complete : Not ||
E. to complete them too 700,000 artisans more than 36 years : Also awkward

But what is wrong with:
The army of terra-cotta warriors is more than 2,000 years old and took 700,000 artisans more than 36 years to complete.

B. the army.....it seems seriously wrong- the army is both the subject and the complement. I much prefer C
We say "This painting took John six years to complete" without 'it' at the end.

I don't really agree with the OA here.
Complete "it" seems unnecessary.
It took the cake 5 hours to bake.
It took the cake 5 hours to bake it.

OA is C
"it" in B is redundant

Is it really a good example with the cake? The sentence with the army is quite different.
It should be : the cake took 1 baker to bake (what? it).
