Sentence correction

Subject verb agreement
    1. Additive phrases: along with, in addition to, as well as. Accompanied by, together with, including
    Joe, along with his friends, Is going to Bangladesh
    2. Or…either/ neither …nor
    Neither Joe nor his friends are
    Neither his friends nor Joe Is
    3. Collective nouns singular: administration, army, class, audience, crowd, faculty, team, orchestra etc
    4. “Nation” indicates always plural……Ex: The Bangladeshi are good people.
    5. Indefinite pronouns usually singular: each. Every, everybody.
    6. Each will carry it subject like: They each are great player
    7. The number of …..singular and a number of ….plural
    8. The only one of the …..Singular. only one of the ….plural
    9. A subject phrase always singular: Having good friends is a wonderful thing
    Or whatever they want to do is fine with me
    10. It , its , they, their
Ex: Everyone here will need his own pencil

Tense
    Present perfect: still going
    Have/has +past participle
    They have known each other for the longest time
    Past perfect: Earlier action
    Had + past participle
    The film had started by the time we arrived at the teacher

If then constructions
Present +will +verb word
Past+would/could+verb word
Past perfect+would +have +past participle

Parallelism
Pronouns – such as which, that, those, who etc signal parallel structure
I prefer to hire employees who work hard to those who don’t.
I like varieties of people, including those who are popular and those who are not.

Comparison
Like, unlike, likening, as many as, as few as, as much as, as little as, as high as, as short as,
Like is used to compare people or things
As is used to compare involving clauses

Nouns
Countable nouns (fewer, number, many)
Uncountable nouns (less, amount, much)

Comparison of actions
French wines better then china do
French wines taste better than china wines does
French wines taste better than do china wines
“Ing” form introduces an action


Pattern to avoid
Preposition(P) + Noun(N) + Participle(P)
Ex……with shower facilities included
P N P

Number greater than 1:
Number greater than 1 is plural
Two out of every three do owners in the USA also own a cat

Quantifiers:
Thirteen percent of Cleveland’s teens are pregnant
‘of Cleveland’s teens’ is not subject

Phrase/clause:
Should have subject+verb or both

Thinking words
Theory, belief, or believe are often followed by that

Some important points
    1. Which without a comma before it is wrong
    2. After when is wrong
    3. Form x to up to y is wrong
    4. Who/whom with he, she, or they then who is correct
    Or
    Who/ whom with him, her, or then, them whom is correct
    5. Each other used when two persons are involved
    Ex: Ross and koss love each other
    6. One another used when there are more than two people
    Ex: The three brothers love another
    7. So……as (combined) is never correct
    He runs everyday so as to build his stamina (incorrect)
    Her debts are so extreme as to threaten the future of the company (correct)
    8. Such as is used to indicate example. Like is used to indicate similarities
    9. Gmat prefers whether instead of if
    10. Uncertainty, hopes, proposal, desires , importance are called subjunctive mood + use only verb word


Others
    1. Whether is correct when discussing two options
    2. If is correct more than two options
    3. To include is often incorrect (use including)
    4. To implement (use implementing)
    5. Avoid to be( because passive form)
    6. During + defined time period is wrong
    Ex: During the past two hours, I felt sleepy (correct)
    7. Hopefully is always wrong
    8. Having + past participle
    9. Most of the students are…( In case of people)
    10. Most of the schools is…..( in case of institute)
    11. Don’t us “because” to start a noun clause
