Serious novelists start writing because of a desire to create a work of art and recognize as great literature the works of other novelists who achieve this goal. As a consequence, when a novel becomes a best-seller, the authors of other novels conclude that the best-seller is not truly great literature.

will go with D.
Only if authors assume that best sellers are not written with a desrire tio create work of art, we can conclude that best sellers are not truly great literature.
Praet, in assumption questions, i always look out for a new concept/idea in the conclusion not previously mentioned in the passage. In this is case it is best-sellers not being works of art.

agree with D. A nice advice to look for a new concept in a conclusion. Likewise, it is OK to check an assumption via negation. If such negation destroys a conclusion, you pick a right answer.
In this case, the negation would be: those novelists who produce best-sellers AIM at producing a work of art. But the gist of the conclusion says that best-sellers are not great literature. Clear contradiction.
