i still feel it requires a "that" to introduce a clause ( a subject and a verb)

without "that" it should be something like this.

announced the closure of (it was closing up to) one fourth of its stores
because of poor sales.

B. it is closing up to one-fourth of its stores, which
accounted for its poor sales - which modifying stores..
C. it was closing up to one fourth of its stores
because of poor sales. – didn’t find any problem with the statement
D. to be closing, on account of poor sales, up to
one-fourth of its stores. – complicated statement
D. having poor sales, such that up to one-fourth of
its stores will be closed. – such is not required,

A. that since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores

B. it is closing up to one-fourth of its stores, which
accounted for its poor sales--- which is referring to store.. as if store accounted for its poor sales.
C. it was closing up to one fourth of its stores
because of poor sales.
D. to be closing, on account of poor sales, up to
one-fourth of its stores.
D. having poor sales, such that up to one-fourth of
its stores will be closed.

Actually there is close contest between B & C.
.. It should be C because.. announced it is closing... means that the action is happening in the present tense
..secondly.. B is verbose as well as suffer from improper pronoun reference.

The only reason I prefer C is because it uses "because of" instead of "since". When you are giving a reason, "because of" is preferable to "since". "Since" normally refers to passage of time. Option A uses since.

I think C

Trans World Entertainment Corporation, which owns
the Record Town and Saturday Matinee retail chains,
announced that since sales of up to one-fourth of its
stores are poor, they will be closed.

A. that since sales of up to one-fourth of its stores
are poor, they will be closed -->"they" is not clearly referent to, sales or stores ??
B. it is closing up to one-fourth of its stores, which
accounted for its poor sales --> announced is in past tense, so "is" is illogical
C. it was closing up to one fourth of its stores
because of poor sales --> I think no problem here
D. to be closing, on account of poor sales, up to
one-fourth of its stores --> "annnounced to be closing" seems unidiom
D. having poor sales, such that up to one-fourth of
its stores will be closed --> too many problems: unidiom, illogical

Here's my take- IMO--C.
A- since is useless here,
B- present tense?? why whole discussion is the past tense, how closing could be done in the present tense.
C- Correct.
D- announced to be closing.. are they closing and announcing together.
E- not make senses.

To all people favoring C, please tell me how the use of 'it WAS' is correct here?

it has started closing, it will start closing might have been correct. But it was?

Economist what is the source?

Can any one explain, how can they refer to sales? Between sales and stores, only stores can be closed. So why pronoun reference error. Please explain as I continously have the same problem

C for me. Even though that is required, the other choices are worse than C. D, announce to is unidiomatic. B, past tense is needed. E is awkward

I got straight C,

B is wrong because, "which accounted for poor sales" modifies "stores", the noun that is just before which and preceded by , (but the intent was to actually modify "up to one-fourth of the stores not just stores")

in C, "announced it was" - all in past tense - correct

Thanks.

C should be the correct answer. Correct usage of tense - i.e. was (announced - verb)
