67. Several industries have recently switched at least partly from older technologies powered by fossil fuels to new technology powered by electricity. It is thus evident that less fossil fuel is being used as a result of the operations of these induestries than would have been used if these industries had retained their older technologies. B) Less fossil fuel was used to manufacture the machinery employed in the new technologies than was orginally used to manufacture the machinery employed in the older technologies. Find the missing link first.
Given argument simply says that because these industries have switched from fossil fuel to electricity, the consumption of fossil fuel is reduced.
The missing link : The argument considers that industries are the ONLY places where fossil fule is used.
Now we have to choose an option which takes care of this missing link and also helps strengthening the argument.
Hence E is the best choice.
B is incorrect because
- B doesn't strengthen the argument
- B has Out of scope information

I have some reservations regarding the OA:
The stimulus says that older technologies were powered by fossil fuel; whereas new technologies are powered by electricity. Now, the OA says that fossil fuel is needed to generate power for the new technologies. This is a direct contradiction with the stimulus.
Please explain.

^ As per the premise and OA, fossil fuel is used to generate electricity which in turn power the new technologies. Fossil fuel does not directly power the new machines, but does so indirectly.
The idea that you'll need to reconcile with is, generating electricity from fossil fuel has a better efficiency than directly burning fossil fuel to run the older machines. Kind of like how an electric train is more fuel efficient than an old steam engine. This will be true even if the power plant of the electric train is thermal!

DexDee, what you are saying is that using electricity is more efficient than burning fossil fuel. But I don't think that this is what they are saying. What they are saying is simply that: (1) They used to have machinery powered by fossil fuel (2) Some industries have switched, at least partly, to powering their machines by electricity and as a result: (3) Less fossil fuel is being used Where do they talk about efficiency? Please explain. Thanks a lot.

The new technology uses electricity to power the machines. But where does the electricity come from? It can be from either of the two : ( 1 ) Renewable resources like wind, solar etc. ( 2 ) Non-renewable resources a.k.a fossil fuels. Now, if the electricity were to be derived from a fossil fuel ( like coal ), the actual fossil fuel burned for the process of generating electricity that is required to power the new machines must be lesser than the (fossil fuel ) energy required to power the older machines. Thus assuming OA to be true, strengthens the argument. PS: Excuse me for veering into technical stuff!

The question has been tagged as a question from the OG.
I am sure everyone already knows this but just want to restate the fact:
OFFICIAL GUIDE ANSWERS ARE NEVER WRONG !!!
Understanding the logic behind the OA is the only possible way to improve. Challenging the OA from GMAC is PURE WASTE OF TIME !!!
The answer to this question is indeed E. The logic behind it has already been explained above.
