Others don't read like conditions when taken out.

Didn't read it properly. If I remember right, this is what laxieqv calls "subjunctive"!!?

cross E because spoke is present verb, but the answer uses future tense
cross D --awkward
cross B and C They in choic A probably mean their name, their position, thus larger than use only their name is choice D&E
