Nice question.
I think I'll go with C.


A is eliminated because of 'were' ascended.Itz not right.
B has baloon in the first part of sentence and then again has a reference in the second part.
C has that and appears correct.
D - 'to ascend' sounds correct. But position of 'that' is not right for me.:(
E.'ascending' -Incorrect tense.

I dont really like the use of 'that'. We dont use 'that' for people. We use 'who'. Here, 'that' cant even refer to the balloon which is obvious from the second part of the sentence which is not underlined. I think 'that' should have been 'who'.

But C is better than 'B' because B gives us the impression that it was only the rooster that ascended.

OA given IS B

However, I think OA got to be C. Must be a typo
