Re: Shostakovich's Forth Symphony had not hardly entered [#permalink]
Hardly entered rehearsals – implies not entered rehearsals
Not hardly – redundant – Eliminate A and B

A. had not hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made him having
B. had not hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made his having
C. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made his having [ His – cannot point to the composer – requires objective form – eliminate it]
D. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made him having [Hold it]
E. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made himself having [Changes the meaning – eliminate it]

Answer: D

A. had not hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made him having
B. had not hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made his having
C. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made his having
D. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made him having
E. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made himself having

A. had not hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made him having
- "hardly" conveys the meaning correctly "not hardly" is unidiomatic and is not required.
B. had not hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made his having
- "hardly" conveys the meaning correctly "not hardly" is unidiomatic and is not required.
C. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made his having
- correct - MADE "HIS HAVING THE PIECE PERFOMED" IMPOSSIBLE
D. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made him having
- made him-what? here "made" modifies "him" - X made him Y
E. had hardly entered rehearsals when the political climate turned against the composer and made himself having
- use of reflexive pronoun is not required here.

Am in the C camp...

A, B- Not hardly redundant.

By the way it sounds to me..I wouldn't go with D or E..I guess the pronoun reference stuff explained in above posters...

Answer: D

This is a classic possessive poison question (check out Manhattan SC guide under Pronouns Strategy).

Shostakovich's symphony is a possessive noun. Only possessive pronouns can refer back to possessive nouns, so in this case "his" is correct. "Him" is an object pronoun and cannot refer back to a possessive noun.

Tricky question and I hope I remember this on test day.
