Should I be expecting something different on verbal? [#permalink] New post 22 May 2012, 06:40
From the posts I've been reading, sc tends to be much more difficult and based on meaning on the test. Is this going to be much different than the gmat prep? I got a 28 last month on verbal and completely deserved it- I didn't study the rules for SC at all and thought I could get away with out it- how wrong was I. I know all the rules cold now and get very few wrong on gmat practice cats. So overall- can I expect basically the same types of sc as gmat prep? Thanks!

GMAT Prep tests are retired GMAT questions. So they will be EXACTLY what you should expect on test day. I'm not sure where you read otherwise, but since GMAT Prep is offered by the makers of the actual GMAT, it would only make sense that they provide you with questions that mimic the actual test as well as possible.

GMAT prep is the best indication of how you will do on test day, and the best practice tests available.

While it is true that the GMAT prep questions were once used on actual GMAT tests, the test does evolve/change slightly over time. For instance, many say the quant has become much more difficult vs the questions from GMAT prep (which by now are many years old). Specifically for your question, GMAC did release a press statement saying it's aim was not to test only esoteric idioms but rather to make sure the test taker can pick up on the meaning of the overall sentence. If that statement alone encompasses all possible tweaks GMAC has made to SC questions is hard to say. Nevertheless, I wouldn't worry too much - as long as you are know your basics and are "in the zone" you should do much better on SC this time around.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask any more questions :).
