In graduate school, I withdrew from 3 classes out of 14 that I enrolled in. One was for poor performance. The other two were dropped because I did not have the academic preparation for the classes (they were way over my head) and they were not required. I dropped those two within the first week of the courses. Does this need explanation? I'm afraid they will think I was failing all three classes when in fact I wasn't failing any, not even the one where I was not performing great. The rest of my grades are good - As and Bs. On the other hand, I am afraid that if I explain Ws, I'd look like I am making excuses.

What do you advise?

i'm in almost exactly the same situation. i have asked some adcoms and the overwhelming response has been "we will wonder about it, put a brief explanation in. don't make excuses or focus on the bad but end on a positive note." i applied to 3 first round schools and included an explanation in the additional information section. i'll let you know how it turns out.
