Should I get an MBA? [#permalink] New post 23 Jan 2006, 17:40
Hello,

I've been reading this forum for a short time. Recently, I've been contemplating going back to school for an MBA. I'm a little later than the average b-school applicant, and certainly don't have the "traditional" background. I'm not thinking of applying for a year or so (perhaps for Fall 2008) but I want to know what I should concentrate on moving forward.

Stats:
1. Undergrad at Notre Dame (history/American Studies majors, managing editor of paper) (3.4 GPA)
2. Post-Graduate of Northwestern Medill School of Journalism (MSJ) (3.7 GPA)
3. 6-yr work history in editorial and public relations (high-tech)
4. Stellar recs

I am a female, age 28 (would be 29 when applying to b-school)

I never gravitated toward math, and my undergraduate grades in math are less than stellar. (Bs in Calc). However, I can do well in math if I try. I have not yet taken the GMAT. I took almost no math/science courses except requirements.

I want to get my MBA to round out my education and help me propel forward in high-tech corporate field. I have a lot of creative training, but no formal business or management classes - this is why I'd like to attend MBA school.

However, with 2 degrees already, I would only go to b-school if I get into a Tier 1 (would perhaps take EMBA courses otherwise.)

What should I be aiming for (lowest) on my GMATs? What should I be focused on to round out my application? Should I take a collegiate-level math class? Will b-schools question my ability/propensity for success in math/stats courses?

Many thanks.

I think your reasons for going to b-school approach of targeting just top-tier schools make sense.

Re: the GMAT, there's no magic number, but I would aim for at least a 650 overall. Hopefully you can get at least 75th percentile or better on the Quant section. Don't stress over your lack of math/quant overall. If yo udo well on the GMAT and your GPA solid (Bs are fine), you're okay. But taking a college-level class can benefit you in another way... It can demonstrate the fact that you're serious about getting into b-school. So, definitely consider it. Don't worry about it being at a fancy school; any will do.
