Is it acceptable to pay references for their time? Any thoughts?

Hmm interesting question. Seems a bit like crossing the line to me. Recommenders should be happy to recommend you based on what you've done for the organization. There shouldn't be "quid pro quo". Certainly you should thank your recommenders and get them a gift for their time and efforts, but payment would be crossing the line from my perspective.
