Should I retake GMAT- ISB Aspirant [#permalink] New post 07 Aug 2013, 00:49
Helo Experts!
My GMAT1 (2 Aug'13) score is 720 and my target B-School is ISB. I am thinking of retaking GMAT and hopeful of improvement of about 30 points. But in that case I will miss deadlines for R1, since I will not be left with much time to prepare application. What do you suggest? Should I apply with this score for R1, or retake GMAT and apply in R2

Here are some details
GMAT - 720 (Q50, V37)
Work Ex : 4.5 yrs
Industry : Telecom (Ericsson India)
Profile : Service Engineer
UG : B.Tech
Acads : 12th 92.4, B.Tech 73
Extra Curricular : nothing spectacular- some sports at college level

Many Thanks!!!

Hey there,

I'm going to make an assumption here and, if I'm wrong, please correct me!

Based on what you wrote (or didn't write - it was a pretty brief profile summary) I'm going to assume you don't have exceptional work experience either. By that I mean, above average leadership or impact. Am I right in that? You also mentioned your extracurriculars are nothing special so that's another thing.

Let me ask you a question - how confident are you in that 30 point improvement? If you haven't got much else to drive differentiation, a great GMAT score can help. A 720 is pretty average for that program - it seems everyone who applies has a killer GMAT.

So, if you're REALLY confident, then go for retaking it and apply R2. If you're not (and you need to be honest here) then apply R1 because if you improve your score 10 points that won't make up for the advantage lost between R1 and R2.

After a 720, I'm not sure how much a higher GMAT can help you. From here on, I believe that it is crafting your story that will make the difference. I have a very long post I wrote regarding people exactly in the same situation as you, and I'd recommend you to read it: to-retake-or-not-to-retake-that-is-the-question-indian-153716.html

I hope all this helps, and if you have any further questions do not hesitate!

Hi Saurabh,

I agree that after 720 score, it's not the GMAT bit other aspects of your profile that will set you apart from other candidates i.e. your career growth, career goals, accomplishments, leadership stories, EC's , yous skills, attitude , personal attributes etc . If you can weave them into compelling and authentic stories into your essays , these will definitely serve as key differentiators .

Round 1 or Round 2 - you need to decide fast because R-1 deadlines are closer than they appear. ( September 15. Right !!!)

Good luck on your application.
