Should I take a class to help my poor GPA? [#permalink] New post 04 Jun 2008, 07:57
Hi,

I recently talked to an MBA admissions consultant who recommended I take a finance class this summer before applying to MBA programs in the fall. I'm 27, male, got a 750 on my GPA, have very good/interesting experience working in finance at a Media company in NYC, but my major weakness is my college GPA. I went to a top public university, but had a very rough freshman year which brought my GPA right below 3.0. I did much better my junior/senior year when I got between 3.3 and 3.7 for all semesters. I'm shooting for schools in the top 10-15.

Do you think it's worthwhile to take a finance class (and make sure I get an A) so i can use this as evidence that i'm smarter than my sub par GPA? Also, the consultant told me it's irrelevant where I take the class (either online or in a top school) -- do you agree with this?

I appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Matt

If you take a class, it shows that you are committed to learning and that you are well prepared for any academic rigor. YOu may want to consider looking for transferrable courses that will allow you exempt out of core courses for your select programs.

I am guessing that is a typo and you meant that your GMAT is a 750, and your gpa is around a 3.3?

I have a 3.3, and I am shooting for the top 5 school myself. I hope 3.3 is not a bad gpa or an automatic ding at a top 5 school.

Maybe others can shed some more light on the gpa issue.

I haven't talked to an admission consultant, but I guess a class would not hurt you, and would show dedication. However, I would find out for sure if your sub-par gpa is really that negative. I would think anything above a 3.0 with a stellar gmat score which you have would cover the academic portion of the application.
