Should I wait until next year? [#permalink] New post 03 Aug 2010, 22:06
Here's my story:
Got back from the Peace Corps about a year ago. In PC I developed an interest in B-school but didn't commit to that decision. Fast forward to this June and I realize that I have neglected to think about school since my time in PC, and that I have a matter of months to take the GMAT and get apps together to apply to begin in 2011. Being a terribly indecisive person, however, I still haven't up for the GMAT (though I've studied some and looked at school applications and essays) because I don't feel 100% committed to B-school (again, I'm indecisive so I'll probably *never* feel 100%). Help me out- is it crazy for me to try to apply in round 2 to begin in 2011, or should I wait until next year? I really need advice and would like to know how long people have started ahead of time applying to schools, taking the GMAT, and so on. Thanks!!!

I think the very first thing you should ask yourself right now is "why you want this MBA"? What can this degree help you in terms of what you want to do? If you can't really answer these questions right now, think about them deeply. I wouldn't rush into the application stage - there's simply way too many things to think about (especially the fact that you haven't sat for your GMAT). Unless you're way over the average age of students in b-school, I wouldn't start my application just yet.

If you have time right now, I would begin studying for the GMAT right away. With all the tools and resources, a lot from GC, I think you can hit you maximum potential score in 2~3 months. I don't think studying for the GMAT 6+ months helps that much - there's a treshold when you begin to flatten out at your peak.

Then you can apply to a few schools since you are on a tight timeline and see what happens. If you don't like the results, then you still have a satisfactory GMAT score for 5 years and a chance to apply again next year. What's there to lose? (except the app fees...)
