a. Should present metal prices continue their sharp rise, Correct. Subjunctive usage is appropriate here.
b. If present metal prices are continuing their sharp rise, Verb-tense mismatch between "are continuing their sharp rise" and "will soon be greater than"
c. If present metal prices continue to sharply rise, Subjunctive verb usage preferable "sharply rise" is incorrect. "rise sharply" should be used instead.
d. Continuation of sharply rising metal prices should mean that Awkward construction
e. Metal prices’ sharp rise continuing should mean that Awkward construction
can you explain Subjuctive usage? thanks

I thought that subjunctive 'should' needed to be followed by 'that'?

A.. in B and C, doesnt the presence of the word 'present' alter the meaning? ideally, should have been if metal prices continue to rise, [then] ....

There are two subunctives :- 1.Hypothetical Subjunctive 2.Command Subjunctive Only command subjuntive requires "that" after the command word.

inverted form of should is right. C is out simply because sharply cannot come in between to rise! be sure

Do we not use "Should" for a "moral obligation" and not for a "likelihood of an event"? In addition, I remember reading somewhere that "VERB-ing" (gerund) should be avoided as much as possible. That leaves us only with option C. I think C it is.

I think C it is. I fell for C too, but the guys mentioned "to sharply rise" is a split infinitive, frm what i recall in mgmat sc, that is a big no no... unless you can prove otherwise?

A as well, as it sounds natural. For C, "to sharply rise" sounds awkward although we may say that in daily conversation.

Nice discussion about split infinitives. I chose A because I felt "to sharply rise" is wrong it should be "to rise sharply".

Is A a "Hypothetical Subjunctive" construction?
If yes, shouldn't it be... the value of the copper in a penny would [strike]will[/strike] soon be greater than the face value of the coin.

(A) Should present metal prices continue their sharp rise, (B) If present metal prices are continuing their sharp rise, (C) If present metal prices continue to sharply rise, (D) Continuation of sharply rising metal prices should mean that (E) Metal prices’ sharp rise continuing should mean that +1 for A. Progressive tense of B is awkward.
