Should retake GMAT-1st 680 (Q 49; V33) ;2nd 660 (Q49, V31) ? [#permalink] New post 23 Jul 2012, 11:08
Hi,

I'm dilemma regarding what should I do now-
Option 1: Retake GMAT (I'm really worried about it considering) ;
Option 2: Go ahead with 680 score for college admissions

I'd prepared hard this time and was pretty confident of scoring atleast 700 on GMAT. Things were going great till Quants and I was at ease with the paper. But then somehow my mind got completely blocked (I believe it was mental exhaustion) and I completely got blank throughout the Verbal section. Consequence, floundered with verbal section and ended up with a meager score of 31 (my lowest of all time.. including practice test)

As can be seen, I scored the same in Quants each time (score - 49) and it was the verbal score which dwindled. Can't boast of being very good in verbal as my average score also varied between 35-37, with sometimes getting even 40+. Following are my practice test scores:

Manhattan GMAT:
Test 1: IR: 1.63 (estimated percentile : 1 -2) ; Quant : 48 ; Verbal : 41 - Total - 730 (97%)
Test 2: IR: 0 (estimated percentile : 1 ) ; Quant : 49 ; Verbal : 34 - Total - 680 (90%)
Test 3: IR: 3.73 (estimated percentile : 3-4) ; Quant : 50 ; Verbal : 35 - Total - 700 (93%)
Test 4: IR: 3.8 (estimated percentile : 3-4) ; Quant : 49 ; Verbal : 44 - Total - 750 (98%)

Kaplan CAT: Test 4: Section score : Quants: 46 ; Verbal : 31 - Total – 610 (78%)

GMAT Prep1: Quants: 49 ; Verbal : 35 ; Total - 700
GMAT Prep 2: Quants 50; Verbal : 34 ; Total - 700

IMS Cat 1: Verbal - 660 ; Quants - 643 - Total - 650
IMS Cat 2: Verbal - 593 ; Quants – 597 – Total – 600

I don't know if i could improve upon my Verbal in next probable attempt (as there's bleak chance of improving upon Quants score). I was targeting following colleges before giving 2nd attempt to GMAT:
1) ISB
2) Marshall
3) NUS , Singapore
4) York Schulich
5) Kenan Flagler
6) Kellogs
7) Carnie Melon
8) GeorgeTown (McDonough)

Please help me to determine if I still hold any chance to get a call from any of these B-schools. Following is my profile:

Work Experience: 3.0 yrs in IT industry as Software Engineer
Nationality : Indian
Graduation: Bachelors of Engineering (Computer Science and Technology) (74%)
12th : 90%
10th : 85%
Other details: Had a decent academic record and got two awards while from company for technical excellence in work. Have evolved as a major party coordinator and a key person in my team. Have recently shifted to Business Analyst profile (but no experience to show in it). Have made a tremendous increase in extra-curricular activities in office and have already mentored arounf 5 people in my team. Also have almost led my team single-handedly in project of two in recent years. Also, I'm a volunteered for teaching kids living in rural areas (have once gone as a teacher also).

My queries :
1) As stated, do I stand a chance in any of the above mentioned B-Schools with my profile?
2) I desperately want to go to B-schools starting next year.. so should I re-take GMAT or rather work on my application process? Note: I'm yet to give TOEFL and have no prior idea of admission process hassles.
3) Can anyone suggest few good colleges where I stand good chances of landing with my scores and profile. (I'm completely naive to B-schools and currently researching on them).

Thanks in advance. :)
