I am trying to understand an MGMAT answer explanation (guide 3 chapter 4 question 9 of fourth edition for those who have the book) which I think should be fairly simple but I'm having a brain freeze at the moment.

Can someone please explain how (1)/(square root of 2) = (square root of 2) / (2) ?? I am just having trouble trying to visualize the steps they left out.

Apologies for the sloppy nomenclature. I am still trying to figure out the 'square root' buttons.

thanks!

multiply by 1 (square root 2 / square root 2)
numerator: 1 * square root 2 = square root 2
denominator: square root 2 * square root 2 = 2

$$1/ \sqrt{2}$$

$$= 1 * \sqrt{2} / \sqrt{2} *\sqrt{2}$$ ( multiplying both numerator and denominator with $$\sqrt{2}$$

$$= \sqrt{2} / 2$$

By the way, this is very basic concept. Hope you're not kidding.
