Since 1945 there have been numerous international confrontations as tense as those that precipitated the Second World War, and yet no large-scale conflict has resulted. To explain this, some argue that fear of enormous destruction such as the Second World War produced has had a dramatic deterrent effect.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the deterrent theory mentioned above?
A) After the First World War, the fear of great future destruction was as intense as it was after the Second World War.
B) Psychologists have determined that the fear of retaliation tends to temper aggressiveness among human beings.
C) The Second World War was far less destructive than most people generally believe.
D) Fear of repeating the levels of destruction that the Second World War produced is as pervasive today as it was forty years ago.
E) Many of the international confrontations that have occurred since 1945 have involved countries that participated in the Second World War.

here we are trying to find out the choice that will provide a reason for us to doubt the conclusion i.e people are scared that ww2 will be repeated so lots on little confrontations stop becoming into large scale wars such as ww2. Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the deterrent theory mentioned above?
A) After the First World War, the fear of great future destruction was as intense as it was after the Second World War. WW1 was feared for destruction too, but WW2 still happened. Herein lies our weakening point B) Psychologists have determined that the fear of retaliation tends to temper aggressiveness among human beings. does not weaken it. a mere human being is talked about here. Not an international confrontation C) The Second World War was far less destructive than most people generally believe. even if this were true, people still believe that it was destructive, so does not weaken since they still would want to stop that much destruction
D) Fear of repeating the levels of destruction that the Second World War produced is as pervasive today as it was forty years ago. strengthens the arguement. If fear of repeating is as large as 40 yrs ago, thats a good thing in support of the argument E) Many of the international confrontations that have occurred since 1945 have involved countries that participated in the Second World War. does not weaken the argument. In fact this could be argued to strengthen it since the same countries are involved in controntations, they do not let these confrontations to blow up like WW2 since they experienced its destructive pain in pre 1945 A

Conclusion: Fear of enormous destruction such as the Second World War produced has had a dramatic deterrent effect.
A) After the First World War, the fear of great future destruction was as intense as it was after the Second World War. [The argument conclusion points out fear of enormous destruction produced has had a deterrent effect – Answer choice has no direct relation to the conclusion of the argument. It only merely compares fear levels – eliminate it]
B) Psychologists have determined that the fear of retaliation tends to temper aggressiveness among human beings.[What Psychologists believe out of argument scope – eliminate it]
C) The Second World War was far less destructive than most people generally believe.[What people believe is irrelevant]
D) Fear of repeating the levels of destruction that the Second World War produced is as pervasive today as it was forty years ago.[But this has no correlation to deterrent effect – eliminate it]
E) Many of the international confrontations that have occurred since 1945 have involved countries that participated in the Second World War. [This clearly reflects argument weakness – hold it]
Answer: E

We have a cause and effect situation in the main question. "Fear" leads to "No war"; Statement A shows that this is not always true, thereby weakening the statement. What is the QA?

I agree it's A.
Conclusion: People will not go to war because of the fear of enourmous destruction.
A) Before WWII there was fear of enourmous destruction and people went to war anyway. This clearly weakens the argument.

I agree with you hanumayamma, it is E
if it's not E, and countries were affraid of war, then how come most of the countries that participated in the "smaller" battles, were the very same countries that participated in WWII?

I definetly think the correct answer is A.
E only strengthens the arguement by saying that any of the international confrontations after 1945 have involved counties that participated in WWII. Why didn't the "small battles" generate into more bigger confrontations. Those countries had the experience of the WWII and were aware of its efects. This is the reason why it was the fear of enormous destruction that stopped them.

if it's not E, and countries were affraid of war, then how come most of the countries that participated in the "smaller" battles, were the very same countries that participated in WWII? I think equating international confrontations to small battles is somewhat confusing. Since 1945 there have been numerous international confrontations as tense as those that precipitated the Second World War and yet no large-scale conflict has resulted. 'There have been many conflicts but they havent resulted in War. To explain this, some argue that fear of enormous destruction such as the Second World War produced has had a dramatic deterrent effect. 'There have been no Wars because the destruction of a previous War has scared people away from going into another War.' E) Many of the international confrontations that have occurred since 1945 have involved countries that participated in the Second World War. The people in the previous War are the people who are in the current conflicts. I make you mad and you decide to fight me and I . I make you mad again but yet you havent decided to fight me yet. That could be because of fear. A) After the First World War, the fear of great future destruction was as intense as it was after the Second World War. 'Before the second War there was another war in which people were scared and the went to war anyway.' There was fear before and people went to war anyway so obviously fear will not stop people from going to war.
