Can someone explain why option D is incorrect. I picked E but what are the errors in D

Can someone also elaborate on the usage of "such that"

Hi fozzzy.

A simple rule is: "Such that" tells you HOW a thing is to be done ("such that" = such a way that) "So that" tells you WHY a thing is to be done

Back to this question: D. many people have been moving to Utah such that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now only account for half Wrong. D does not convey the result of "the moving". In fact, D says that many people have been moving such a way that the Mormons now only account for half. ==> D indicates the way that many people have been moving [HOW people have been moving]. Hence, D does not make sense.

E. so many people have been moving to Utah that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now account for only half Correct. "so that" tells you the result. Because so X, that Y......

Hope it helps.

This sentence shows why it is important not only to be able to spot an error but also to go through each of the answer choices looking for a repeat of that same error. Noticing that answer A uses "so many ... such that" indicates an idiom error and scanning each of the remaining answer choices the reader finds similar errors in each of the following answer choices. while there may be many more things wrong with the sentence sticking to one error at a time helps the reader to focus

A. so many people have been moving to Utah such that Mormons who were once 75 percent of the population are now only accounting for half of it This sentence has an improper idiom in that uses so... such that it also has the improper use of acconting for instead of account for B. many people have been moving to Utah, so Mormons once 75 percent of the population are now accounting for only half This error incorrectly uses accounting for C. that many people have been moving to Utah, such that the Mormons that were once 75 percent of the population are now accounting for only half of it same as B D. many people have been moving to Utah such that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now only account for half such that is improper here E. so many people have been moving to Utah that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now account for only half

between Morons who were 75 percent of the population and Morons who once represented 75 of the population the second one is correct. only should modify half of it not accounting. so..... that ... is the correct idiom.

Structure of the sentence - So X that Y

Moreover, I think, the present progressive tense in the last part (.....are accounting for...) does not make much sense to me. It should be Present Indefinite (.....account for....).

I struggled with E cause the end of the sentence is just "account for only half". Isn't there something missing, like "of it"? For me it sounds like that is missing, because it's not really clear to what the "half" is referring...

In answer choice A...the only problem is the "such" right? Without the "such" it would be a correct, sentence, right?

Since 1975 so many people have been moving to Utah such that Mormons who were once 75 percent of the population are now only accounting for half of it.

Split 1# : “Only accounting for half” Vs “Accounting for only half” Only should modify Half not account or accounting. Only accounting implies, Mormons could have done something great but they only account. So option A and D are incorrect. Split 2 # : “Are now accounting” Vs “now account” Present progressive is not required. Sentence presents a general fact, I think Simple present is much better choice than Simple progressive. Option A, B, C – Incorrect Split 3 : “Were 75 % population” Vs” represented 75% of population” One cannot be 75% of population, but it can represent 75% of population. Indians Represent 30 % of Canadian population. We cannot say Indians are 30% of Canadian population. Later is not proper. So “were 75 % of population” is incorrect Option A,C incorrect

A. so many people have been moving to Utah such that Mormons who were once 75 percent of the population are now only accounting for half of it - Incorrect – Split1, 2 , 3 B. many people have been moving to Utah, so Mormons once 75 percent of the population are now accounting for only half Incorrect – Split 2 C. that many people have been moving to Utah, such that the Mormons that were once 75 percent of the population are now accounting for only half of it Incorrect Incorrect - split 2,3 D. many people have been moving to Utah such that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now only account for half Incorrect Incorrect – split 2 E. so many people have been moving to Utah that the Mormons, who once represented 75 percent of the population, now account for only half - Correct

Grammar in action:

Correct idiom usage: so x that y

Every option, other than E, demonstrates what not to combine with many, such that etc. Also, option E showcases the modifier placement very well Mormons, <phrase modifying or talking about what comes just before the comma> _________________
