A it should be.

Maybe not accurate, but the best answer wins.

A as well

C,D,E are not concise. B is more awkward than A is.

Wow. Even I was tempted initially with B. Because B has no 'it'. But if you use B in the original sentence, you will find the clumsiness immediately.

A and E are close. But, I eliminate E for two reasons. First nothing wrong with A and 'what it did for' sounds awkward.

Thanks Leo,

I am calm down to think why I choose B as incorrect, I think "the growth..." can not "exceeds". is that convincing reasoning? thanks!

A for correctly using present perfect (has been) and simple past (did).
Also, 'From when' is awkward in B.

'A for correctly using present perfect (has been)'

choice A does not use 'has been' (present perfect)??

edit: never mind, it uses 'has grown'..

The rationale lies in verb tenses:

"Since 1900 (to now)" => The period is ongoing => present perfect
"from 10000BC to 1950" => The period has finished => past tense

There are some SC questions that are definitely more evident to foreign students of English than to native speaker (and become more difficult as the foreigner improves his English). :)

Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.

A) Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.
B) Since 1990 the growth of the global economy has been more than that during 10,000 years, from when agriculture began.
C) The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds that which had been for 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture.
D) The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds what it has been for 10,000 years, from when agriculture began
E) The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds what it did for the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture.

I have read this Manhattan forum:
to eliminate option E: the explanation was given as below:please can some one explain
what it did' doesn't make any sense:
* the growth didn't 'do' anything
* there's no other verb to which 'did' could logically be parallel to complete the comparison

E) The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds what it did for the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture.

* the growth didn't 'do' anything
This means that it's inappropriate to say "the growth exceeds what it did", from a logical point of view. The first part is fine ("the growth exceeds ") the second one is logically flawed as the growth cannot do anything ("what it did").
* there's no other verb to which 'did' could logically be parallel to complete the comparison
Example:
I sing better than Micheal Jackson does (sing).<== does stands for the verb "sing"
Now look at E: there is no verb that "did" can stand for. To give you another example, consider the correct answer:

A) Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than it did (grow)during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.

Does this sentence make sense?

The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds what it did (exceeds) for the 10,000 years (...)

The growth since 1990 exceeds what it exceeds-exceeded for the 10000 years (...) <== does something like this make sense?

The intended verb that "did" should stand for is "grow", but here there is no such verb: there is "growth" (a noun).

Hi,

here we are comparing the economy growth since 1990 till today ..and economy growth during 10000 years from beginning......

since there is comparison it must be parallel.

option A:

A) Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.

FIRST HALF SENTENCE: sub: THE GLOBAL ECONOMY. VERB : HAS GROWN
SECOND HALF SENTENCE: SUB: IT(this IT is referring to GLOBAL ECONOMY) VERB: DID( means it represent the same action done by subject i.e. has grown)
HENCE YOU SEE THEY ARE PARALLEL ...BOTH PRONOUN AND VERB ARE CLEAR.

E) The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds what it did for the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture.

FIRST HALF SENTENCE: sub: THE GROWTH OF GLOBAL ECONOMY (FOLLOWED BY PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE) VERB : EXCEEDS
SECOND HALF SENTENCE: SUB: IT(this IT is referring to GROWTH) VERB: DID
NOT PARALLEL

NOW IF you replace this DID with EXCEEDS IN OPTION E
SENTENCE BECOMES:

The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds what IT EXCEEDS for the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture.===> THIS IS ILLOGICAL..

SIMILARLY CHECK FOR A:

A) Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than IT HAS GROWN during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.===>THIS DOES MAKES SENSE...

HOPE IT HELPS

Do all the options except A change the meaning by omitting 1950. I think A talks about a time frame.

Hello monish.

Just want to elaborate the explanation a bit. Hope it helps.

Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.

A) Since 1990 the global economy has grown more than it did during the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture to 1950.
Correct.
"Since" is signal of present perfect tense. --> "has grown" is correct.
time frame: from X to Y --> correct.

B) Since 1990 the growth of the global economy has been more than that during 10,000 years, from when agriculture began.
Wrong.
from when X to what? --> correct idiom is: from X to Y.

C) The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds that which had been for 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture.
Wrong.
- "that which" is awkward.
- Same problem as in B. The correct time frame should be "from X to Y".

D) The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds what it has been for 10,000 years, from when agriculture began
Wrong.
- Because of "since" --> present simple tense "exceeds" is incorrect.
- Same problem as in B. The correct time frame should be "from X to Y".

E) The growth of the global economy since 1990 exceeds what it did for the 10,000 years from the beginning of agriculture.
Wrong.
- Because of "since" --> present simple tense "exceeds" is incorrect.
- Same problem as in B. The correct time frame should be "from X to Y".

Hope it helps.
