Since savings banks have to use short term deposits to finance long term fixed rate mortgage loans , they sometimes lose money when there is a rise in short term rates and on the other hand , they are unable to raise the rates on their mortgages.

A. when there is a rise in short term rates and on the other hand , they are unable to raise

B. when short term rates rise and they are unable to raise

C. when a rise in short term rates occurs and , correspondingly , there is no rise possible in

Does "they" in B have a logical referent ?

what are the problems with C...

thanks

I would choose B

Notice that "they" is already been used in the part of the sentence that is not underlined (which is supposed to be ok).

If this validates "they", then B is better than C since it's much more concise.

What do you think?

C changes the meaning. "there is no rise possible in" # "they are unable to raise". "possible" is bad

Why comma (,) is not used in choice B before and. I think B should have been as follows:

when short-term rates rise, and they are unable to raise
