Since the city council sent a letter to the residents of Newport on the danger to the environment of smoke from beach firepits, residents have cut their use of beach firepits by 20 percent. Obviously the city council's letter was responsible for the residents' decision to reduce their consumption of firewood.

The author relies on which one of the following to advance his argument?

A) When it sent the letter, the city council predicted a reduction in the consumption of firewood.

B) The cost of firewood has not increased significantly in Newport since the city council sent the letter.

C) Danville, a city 10 miles from Newport also experienced a drop in the use of beach firepits.

D) Previous initiatives by the city council to preserve the environment have been well-recieved in the town of Newport.

E) Gas burning barbeques have become more popular on the beaches of Newport.

Hi,

I presume it as an Assumption question(cannot be a strengthen q as there is no "if true").

IMO option D.

The conclusion states that there was an actual reduction following of beach firepits following the city council's letter. Thus the underlying assumption should be that the residents generally abide by the city council's directives. Hence, previous initiatives must have been accepted as well...ie. option D.

What assumption does the author rely on to advance his argument?

The assumption that would eliminate other major causes of reduction in consumption of firewood.

B) The cost of firewood has not increased. If the cost of firewood has not increased well then we can say that people really do care about the environment , but if it has increased we have a other reason for the decline in firewood's usage. So B fits the bill.

The author relies on which one of the following to advance his argument? - is a clear indicator of assumption question stem.

IMO Option B stands out as the correct answer choice among all.

Thanks,
Vaibhav.

Official Answer is B.

Obviously the city council's letter was responsible for the residents' decision to reduce their consumption of firewood.

Conclusion: The letter caused the reduced consumption of firewood
Premise: reduced consumption started after the letter

The assumption in these types of causal argument are that there were no other causes so t strengthen arguments like this the GMAT often relies on eliminating other possible causes

The author relies on which one of the following to advance his argument?

A) When it sent the letter, the city council predicted a reduction in the consumption of firewood.their prediction would have no effect on whether it was caused

B) The cost of firewood has not increased significantly in Newport since the city council sent the letter. This is the correct answer because if the cost of firewood had increased then that would be another possible cause for the decrease in consumption - eliminating this as a possibility eliminates a possible cause and thus strengthens

C) Danville, a city 10 miles from Newport also experienced a drop in the use of beach firepits. ot only does this answer address a different city, it also talks about drop in fire pit useage, instead of firewood

D) Previous initiatives by the city council to preserve the environment have been well-recieved in the town of Newport. The fact that some similar initiatives were well received does not automatically mean that this one was - there are too many things that could be different for this to strengthen

E) Gas burning barbeques have become more popular on the beaches of Newport. This actually gives another cause for the decrease and thus weakens the causal relationship

The key to this question is that the conclusion is that there is a causal relationship, not that the firewood was reduced. Thus you have to focus on whether the answer choice strengthens the causal relationship

Here's why I thought D wouldn't be an answer. D says other initiatives were well received. The premise states that the consumption was cut down by 20% and 20% isn't actually "well".
