six month GMAT Prep [#permalink] New post 07 Jan 2010, 09:42
Good Morning ~
I have six months to prepare for the GMAT. This will be my second take. I scored 410 in round one. I returned two years ago to university to complete my undergraduate degree after 20 years in the workforce. I have been successful with the completion of my degree, but algegbra, geometry, and the like are extremely foreign to me at this point in life. My score certainly indicates that.

Having done so poorly, I'm going to take extra time to put together and execute a comprehesive study plan. My intention is to take the Manhattan Online prep course. Once I sign up, I'll have access to the materials and online sessions in advance of the actual class. I also have secured the EZ Solutions GMAT Prep Package, which I intend to coordinate with the Manhattan GMAT and GMATclub materials. My first three months will be spent reviewing the programs indentified. At the completion of this phase, I'll take the Manhattan Online Program. Once complete with that, I'll take the test.

I have no expectation to reach 700, but I believe I can do better than round one. It is extremely important that I secure access into an MBA program. Any direction or guidance you can provide regarding my approach to study would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Mount!

Welcome to GMAT Club. Your material pack sounds pretty good. You may want to review these few threads for some additional ideas:

everything-you-need-to-prepare-for-the-gmat-revised-77983.html

A word of caution - don't stretch out your prep so much - you have a much better chance of getting a higher score if you study 4 months rather than 6. Human mind is a tricky thing and lasts about 3-4 months ideally, then you are starting to lose what you have learned previously.

Thank you bb ~
I clearly hear you. My concern is, I feel six months may not be enough. Much of the math is not so much review, but will be more like learning it for the first time. I'm concerned I can't cram that much learning into that short a period of time. By reviewing the Manhattan course recorded sessions online, and taking the time to work through the assignments, I think I will have a much better chance keeping up with the actual live course and assignment load when I actually take the course. If I don't completely preview the course before the live sessions, I'm confident I will be lost and not be able to keep up during the nine sessions, thereby wasting my money, my time, and any possiblity to come out with a higher score.

I intend to use a preview log, along with the suggested error log, so I am prepared to interact in the live sessions with more confidence. Also key to my strategy is that I will take the test immediately following my completion of the live online course. This way, the live course will be more like an interactive final review before I retake the exam. Do you see?

Thank you again for providing the links listed above. I have begun reviewing them. Any other direction you can offer is appreciated.

I took a MGMAT prep course too early and found that I totally wasted time, resources, etc. Your plan to review the recorded sessions early sounds good. I'd recommend that you put a premium on going through the strategy guides. Gain as clear of an understanding as possible. Use supplemental materials if some things still are unclear. For instance, I just went through the geometry book and found that the strategy guide alone wasn't enough given my starting pt. I've been digging into my petersons and kaplan books and it's paying off.
