Re: Smelling of rotten eggs , sulfur dioxide is formed in [#permalink]

B

(A) two sentences should be connected by a coordinating conjunction or a subordinating conjunction. The initial sentence is lacking such a conjunction that it causes an awkward sentence. In addition, a passive voice sentence in general should be followed by a preposition 'by',
(B) best option here. The verb 'react' also indicates its subject is plural, 'sulfur and oxygen'
(C) A coordinating conjunction 'and' causes a subordinating clause 'when...' to a segment.
(D) This suggests that 'sulfur dioxide' be a subject of the whole, but verb 'react' doesn't agree with the subject in this case.
(E) wrong same reason for D.

I completely agree, also notice that in C the comma separates the subject and the verb

IMO, A.

(A) best choice
(B) created is wrong - eliminate
(C) conjunction and - make the sentence wrong
do not need a conjunction here as the reaction od S and O is not independent
(D) no verb - eliminate
(E) no verb - eliminate

Smelling of rotten eggs , sulfur dioxide is formed in smokestacks from sulfur and oxygen , two of the major elements consumed in coal smelting , react with each other.

A sulfur dioxide is formed in smokestacks from--- here we are using "from" but if complete the sentence using "from", the sentence will not make sense ( sulphur dioxide is formed from...sulfur & oxygen,..... react with each other). To justify the clause "react with each other", we need a "when".
B sulfur dioxide is created when---It was ok with me, but some how i found the word "created" awkward here
C sulfur dioxide , is formed in smokestacks and when-----though it has an extra "and", it looks fine to me
D sulfur dioxide, formed in smokestacks when----its a fragement, real meaning is lost
E sulfur dioxide , formed in smokestacks from-------same as above

This is a good one!! :) I found an error in every option.

"B" is fine but dont know why the word created is looking me odd here. So I go for "C"

A sulfur dioxide is formed in smokestacks from
B sulfur dioxide is created when
C sulfur dioxide , is formed in smokestacks and when
D sulfur dioxide, formed in smokestacks when
E sulfur dioxide , formed in smokestacks from

Could someone provide explanation for that one. Nice explanations will be appreciated via kudos :)) . Thanks all for your help :) . OA after explanations.

I think it is between B and D .. we need a 'when' here.

I think 'formed' past verb makes this option wrong so ..I think B is fine.

picking B, sulfur dioxide if formed when sulfur and oxygen react with each other. can't have coma there...

A is not right either, unless changed to sulfur and oxygen reacting with each other...

Re: Smelling of rotten eggs , sulfur dioxide is formed in [#permalink]
Remove phrases and the sentence will read as

Sulfur dioxide is formed in somkestacks from sulfur and oxygen react with each other. obviously, this is wrong.

Now consider option B.
sulfur dioxide is created when sulfur and oxygen react with each other. -[color=#008000]sounds right. so my pick is B.

NOw consider C

sulfur dioxide , is formed in smokestacks and when sulfur and oxygen react with each other - wrong . (Notice comma). No subject.

Consider D & E .

sulfur dioxide, formed in smokestacks when sulfur and oxygen react with each other - wrong . run -on
sulfur dioxide , formed in smokestacks from sulfur and oxygen react with each other - wrong . run -on

B seems grammatically correct, but misses the original information.

what is the source?
