So frustrated [#permalink] New post 11 Dec 2010, 00:41
Here is my story. I took the GMAT the first time in Sept 2004 and got 690. It was for my MBA applications. It was really good actually given that I didn't have good study materials, 1997 version of OG, Kaplan, Kaplan CD, and questions from GMATClub. Plus, my English wasn't very good then as I just graduated from the college. I spent about 4 months for the test.

Ok, here is the disastrous part of my story. I took the GMAT yesterday again, this time for my PhD applications and got 660. This time I had all books: OG 12nd, OG verbal & math, Kaplan, GMAT 800, Kaplan CD, and questions & tests from GMATClub. In addition, my English is much better now. Probably, the problem was that I only spent 1 month to prepare and I didn't concentrate enough. I have 2 weeks to hit over 700. So frustrated

Hi Bigtooth,

Sorry to hear things haven't yet gone your way. Don't get frustrated, though; 40 points in two weeks is a challenge, but hardly an insurmountable one!

However, with two weeks to go, you need to maximize your study time. Here are a few pieces of advice for last-minute prep:

1) Work timed. With more time, you can experiment with new techniques that might take a while to master, then slowly whittle down the time until they are effective. With only two weeks, however, it's important that as much of your practice as possible be under timed conditions to best prepare you for the test.

2) Only use the OG for material you know well. The OG is the best source of test-like problems, but they are NOT the best source of strategy or explanation. Work on your weak areas out of one of your Kaplan books, using our explanations and shortcuts, until you feel more comfortable with the content, and only once you're able to self-evaluate and self-correct should you work out of the Guide.

3) Look for shortcuts on tricky problems. Picking numbers, classic sentence errors, and classic argument errors can all turn a complex problem into quick, easy points; take a look at your Kaplan book for guidelines on how these strategies can reward you.

I'm happy to help you out with any specific advice you may need. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you!

Eli

One thing to mention is that I believe you can only take the GMAT every 30 days. I am sorry if this is bad news, but it is definitely something to verify before you make solid plans regarding the test.

Hi guys, thank you so much for the helpful advices. Yes. I must wait 31 days before I can take the test again. I will surely follow your advices in my study plan with high focus on practicing and strategies for tricky problems.

Interestingly enough, I found that I am kind of slower than I was 7 years ago. It is probably because in the last 7 years, I took standardized exams, like the CFA, that mostly concentrate more on theories than on speed and skills. This affected the way that I worked on GMAT questions this time. I have a month to change all this. Again. thank you all for your advices.

PS: Eli, you are in Cambridge. I lived there 2005 - 2008 and got my MBA from Northeastern.
